Ladies Guest Day

Jan Geddes, Wednesday, 10 March 2010

On Tuesday 9th March Ladies Guest Day went ahead despite the greens being closed the day before due to torrential rain. Many prayers were said as President Judy had shopped the day before in readiness for lunch and afternoon tea. Guest Day is our day for raising money for the VLBA Charity which this year was for Heart Kids, a very deservig cause. The tables were set up with 2 shades of pink serviettes with fresh flowers on the table, everyone received a special book mark to remember the day and our best crockery was used. The Match Committee did a great job as usual dealing with last minute withdrawals and when a team arrived which the Karingal member had forgotten to enter, some of the Match Committee ladies pulled out to give the guests a game. The day started off with the usual draw to the spider and draw to the ditch. The first game was started and as dark clouds loomed we had a very heavy shower on the 11th end of the first game. The 12th end was completed and we went into lunch and enjoyed a mixture of lovely sandwiches followed by a fruit platter. There was no sign of rain and another 12 ends were completed before we went in to enjoy lovely cream sponges and a plate of dips and nibbles. The guests were presented with pens which were hand painted by Noelle Fagg and a little notebook. The prizes were trophies donated by C & D Trophies and Debbie was there to present them. First prize Winners were presented with clocks, Runners Up were presented with lovely vases or glasses and then a card was drawn for the engraved mugs. The many raffles were drawn and President Judy announced that we had raised just over $600.00. Trevor Jordan has assured us that the B.O.M. will make the total $1,000.00. The day was enjoyed by everyone who participated. Thanks to Ladies and Match Committees for all the hard work you put in to this most succesful day.

P.S. Photos coming later.

Cheers and Tears as Karingal Div 1 and Div 2 Ladies bring home the Flags!

Annette Agnew, Wednesday, 3 March 2010

Peninsula District Ladies Pennant Grand Filnals were played yesterday! Divisions 1, 2 & 4 were played at Mornington Civic while Division 3 played at Mornington. Our Division 1 girls played off against their arch rivals in R.S.L. and were determined to overcome the disappointment of the last couple of years while the Division 2 side came up against Mt. Eliza.  The games were played in ideal conditions and by the lunchtime break scores were close with Division 1 down by only 2 shots 43 - 41, and Division 2 going into lunch 3 shots in arrears to Mt. Eliza 42 - 39. The old saying of Bowls is a game of 2 halves couldn't have been truer as both Karingal sides came back to resume the game with belief and determination and the whole of the hard work during the season on their shoulders and as the last bowls were delivered it was Karingal who came out the victors! Spectators had been treated to some excellent bowling from all teams competing and it was cheers and tears as the triumphant Karingal sides celebrated their victories. Division 1 final score was 72 - 65, and Division 2 final score was 76 - 63! The celebrations continued back at the club where excited players proudly displayed the two flags and celebrated with a chardy or two and possibly relived every end of the games! Congratulations to both sides, the Club is extremely proud of your efforts!

Bev Wins Peninsula Section of The State Over 60's Final

Jan Geddes, Friday, 26 February 2010

On Friday the 26th February the final of the Peninsula Section of the State Over 60's Singles was played at Long Island Bowling Club. The game was between Mary Masters of Koo Wee Rup Bowling Club and Beverly Hamill of Karingal Bowling Club. Both ladies had bowled very well the day before to reach the final. So a very good game was expected. Early in the game the score was 4 all, then Bev hit the front with lovely draw bowling  and the spectators thought that Bev was going to win quite easy. At 13 all Mary had fought back and the game was on. Going into what turned out to be the last end when the scores were Bev 18,  Mary 17, Bev knocked Mary's bowl out of the head to get the 3 shots needed to win the game. Congratulations to both ladies for a really good game. Bev now goes to Warburton next Wednesday to play off in the Group 9 Final. Joy Thomson won this event last year and went on to be the State Winner. Go Bev, the whole club is behind you.

Mary and Bev Win Club Pairs Championship

Jan Geddes, Thursday, 18 February 2010

On Thursday the 18th February the Final of the Ladies Championship Pairs was played between Barbara Fowler and Jean Leenstra (skip) and Mary Redston and Bev Castle (skip). Mary was asked to play with Bev when Sharon Snow was unable to play because Sharon had to go into hospital and was unable to bowl. Mary and Bev scored ones in the first 3 ends and six on the 5th end to lead comfortably at 9 to 1. Barb and Jean fought back to level the score at 12 all on the 13th end. However that is when Mary and Bev pulled out all stops and scored 15 shots to 1 in the last 6 ends. Winning the game 27 to 13. Mary was the outstanding player on the day ably backed up by Bev. Congratulations to both teams, all who came to watch were glued to their seats until the very end. Apologies from President Judy who was unable to be there. Vice President Margaret Taberner presented the four ladies with beautiful pot plants and the Winners with the Perpetual Trophy. Mary who has won PDLBA events was especially thrilled to win as it is the first time in her 25 years at the club that she has won a Club Championship. Well done ladies.

President Judy's Invitation Day

Jan Geddes, Wednesday, 17 February 2010

After a lot of hard work and a lot of planning, Ladies President's Invitation Day was held on Thursday 11th February. Twenty six teams from everywhere were warmly welcomed to the club by President Judy and Secretary Jan. they were treated to a lovely morning tea of home made muffins made by our Providor Mary Redston. The tables were beautifully decorated in mauve and aqua green and looked lovely and fresh, the weather although warm and muggy was bearable. The day started off with playing to the spider and then ditch to ditch. After playing 12 ends the players came in and enjoyed a lovely meal of quice and salad followed by jellied fruit custard and cream. Another 12 ends were played and a lovely afternoon tea was enjoyed by all. The many raffle prizes  were drawn and were won by different members of different clubs. We were fortunate to have special guests Joan Adams IPP of VLBA and a member at Karingal and Group 9 Councillor and Vice President of the VLBA Gillian Jolly in the President's team. P.D.L.B.A. Committee headed by President Fay Halligan were also special guests. The day was sponsored by Tobin Brothers and Alan Muller presented the teams with their prizes. President Judy closed the day by thanking everyone for comings she thanked both commttees especially Mary, John and Grace for working out the winners and Diana for being the umpire and her secretary Jan. Canadian Pairs

Jan Geddes, Friday, 5 February 2010

On Sunday 31st January the Ladies Canadian Pairs Tournament was held at Karingal Bowling Club. Invitations had been sent out and unfortunately there were only 10 acceptances received from outside the club. It was decided to invite our own members to make up the numbers. Two days before the event we had reached the grand total of 24 teams. However the night before 2 teams pulled out due to the forcast of a hot day. We eventuall started the day with 20 teams taking to the green. Half way through the second game some ladies became heat affected, the temperature had reached 34 celcius so the bell was rung to stop play for the day as there was no sign of a cool change. Everyone enjoyed the concept of 2 x 4 x 2 and said they would enter again next year. Mary Redston our Providor and the Ladies Committee put on a lovely morning tea of home cooked muffins and for lunch we had salad filled croisants followed by fruit platters and her fabulous chocolate ripple cake.  All in all everyone that entered had an enjoyable day. Peter Chard - SURESHFT was the days Sponsor which we really appreciated and he was there to present the Winners, Runners Up, Best First and Second Games and the draw for Lead and Skip. He has kindly offered to Sponsor it again next year. Thank you Peter.

P.S. If anyone can tell me why this concept is called Canadian Pairs, please let me know.

Ladies Pennant Break-Up Dinner 2009/10

Annette Agnew, Wednesday, 3 February 2010

With another Pennant 'Home & Away" season completed, the Karingal Ladies Pennant players enjoyed a break-up Dinner and Entertainment Extravaganza! Chairperson of Selectors, Diana Francis ably acted as MC for the evening and Welcomed All and gave special thanks to the Board of Management who had generously provided the meal at no charge to the players. Diana also thanked our men who week after week during the season help the Ladies by setting the tables, helpng with the score boards and umpiring etc.

An award presentation of the inaugural Lorrikeet Lodge Trophy for the rink with the best Aggregate Score for the season was won by the team of Jan Geddes (S), Gloria Taylor (T), Mary Redston (S) and Bev Carden (L).

Four acts, two performed by Diana Francis, Eileen Burgess, and new member Liz Eccle Smith entertained us before we enjoyed a delicious meal. Kudos to the catering staff, the meal was fantastic and I'm sure there was not one disappointed person in the room.

The main entertainment then followed in the form of a Royal Gala Performance lead by Jean Leenstra and friends. Jean impersonated Rolf Harris and helped by her friends performed his famous "Jake the Peg" rountine. Joyce Toth played the part of Queen Elizabeth 11 and looked every bit the part. Sounds of laughter echoed through the Club as the girls performed their act and one lady in particular had everyone guessing as to who the indigenous didgeridoo player was and even when I realised it was in fact Sue Ashman I still found it hard to believe!

All in All it was a hugely successful night and I'm sure thoroughly enjoyed by all! Seems like there is no end to the talent at our Club!

Derek Win's Men's Singles Championship

Jan Geddes, Monday, 14 December 2009

The Final of the Men's Singles was played on Sunday 13th of December.  Geoff Westmore and Derek Heseldon were the two finalists.  It was like a repeat of what happened in the Ladies Final. Geoff got off to a good start scoring two on the first two ends, Derek won the next four ends and by the 11th end the scores were Derek 9 to Geoff 8. The 18th end saw Derek leading 19 to 10 and we thought the game was nearly over. That is when Geoff made a remarkable come back playing some brilliant conversion shots making the score 23 all on the 28th end. Unfortunately for Geoff he was holding shot but nicked Derek's bowl in for one shot and Derek drew another Geoff was unable to convert on the crucial end. Both men played very well and as the saying goes it's a pity there has to be a loser. Congratulation fellows.

Sandra Takes out the Double

Jan Geddes, Sunday, 13 December 2009

On Thursday the 10th of December the final of the Ladies Singles Championship was played.

The game was between Sandra Attard and Dawn Chard who had both played very well to get to the final. Dawn started off very well winning the first two ends but after 13 ends Sandra was leading 13 to 6 and after the 18th end the score was 19 to 8. When the scores were Sandra 24, Dawn 13 we all thought the game was over. But Dawn had not given up she score 9 on the next 6 ends to get to 22 to Sandra's 24. Unfortunately for Dawn Sandra drew a very close shot which Dawn was ubable to beat. Both ladies bowled very well and kept the spectators in their seats until the end. The victory gave Sandra the double as she had won the President's Handicap in November. Congratulations to both ladies.

Karingal Ladies Win Group 9 Foundation Shield

Jan Geddes, Friday, 20 November 2009

On Thursday 19th November a team consisting of President Judy Taberner, Secretary Jan Geddes (skip), Senior Vice President Margaret Taberner and Treasurer Judy Congress ventured to Mount Martha to play in the Annual Group 9 Foundation Day formerly know as Jo Pegler Day. The host Association this year was the Flinders District, on arrival the teams were warmly welcomed and enjoyed a nice cuppa and finger food. The idea of this day is for members of each committe to have a nice day out together as well as raising funds to pay expenses for Group 9. Gillian Jolley Group 9 Councillor Vice President of the VLBA was there as well as District Presidents and Secretaries from the three Associations. There were teams from 26 different clubs entered. The games started at 9.30 am it was decided to play 15 ends only because of the temperature forecast of 35 degrees celcius. Every alternate end we had to bowl to a circle at the top of the rink and each bowl in the circle counted, the other ends were played as normal. It was starting to get very warm at the end of 15 ends and we went into lunch. The raffles were drawn and then it was time to announce who the winners of the day were. There were three teams on equal shots up so they had to go by percentage. The Runners Up was a team from Dromana, then when they announced the winners Karingal, we were pleasantly shocked and surprised as Karingal has never won this event before in the 42 years of it's inception. While we were waiting for the entertainment Gillian read out some funny stories that were circulated through e mail. The entertainment was enjoyed by everyone, two very talented ladies from Rosebud Bowling Club mimed 2 songs each which had us all clapping our hands and singing along to Sadie The Cleaning Lady, My Blue Heaven and one more song. We then enjoyed a very nice afternoon tea. A lot of time was spent putting the day together. Thank you to all involved for making this a most enjoyable day.

Lady President's Handicap Final

Jan Geddes, Saturday, 31 October 2009

On Thursday the 29th October the final of the Lady President Handicap Final was played. The game was between Sandra Attard and Jean Leenstra who had both displayed lovely draw bowling in the semi final the week before. It was a lovely sunny day and the green was running nicely. They both had handicaps of 20. Sandra got off to a good start and was plus 11 after the 5th end while Jean started off nervously and was still minus 1. On the 7th end Jean was only 8 shots behind Sandra but Sandra who had won the event 3 years earlier kept at it to be the eventual winner. There was lovely draw bowling from both ladies and the members who came to watch enjoyed the game. While the game was on more shade sails were being installed, hence the photos.

In Honour of Gwil Taberner and Richard Calleja

Jan Geddes, Wednesday, 14 October 2009

On Saturday the 10th October 2009 some of our Karingal members ventured to the Frankston Yacht Club as it was their Opening Day of the season.

It was a special day for the Karingal Bowling Club as we were there to honour the memory of two of our past members, namely Gwil Taberner and Richard Calleja, who had both been members of the Yacht Club and who had both sadly passed away while holding positions on our Board of Management. The Board of Management had donated money for two "Opti's" which have been named in memory of Gwil and Richard. It was a beautiful sunny day and we were warmly welcomed by members of the yacht club. We enjoyed a lovely feast of a wide variety of tasty finger food. Margaret Taberner and Pat Calleja were there as special guests. Members of both families were there with some travelling from other states. Colin Hampton our Mayor and other councillors were in attendance with Trevor Jordan and Keith Jones representing the Karingal Bowling Club's Board of Management and it was good to see Keith up and around again after his major heart attack. We were pleasantly surprised to see our very busy Group 9 Councillor Gillian Jolley, she has been a member of the Yacht Club for many years and she is a secretary there. Margaret and Pat were both presented with a lovely bunch of flowers. Hopefully the photos speak for themselves. We wish the yacht club " Happy sailing"

Singles Champions 2008/09

Presentation Night

Jan Geddes, Monday, 11 May 2009

Presentation Night was held on Saturday 26th April. Everyone who attended had a great time.  Karingal Bowling Club is very proud of their members achievements as they won lots of  Group 9 and Group 7 and P.D.L.B.A and P.B.A  Events this season. The top Title went to Lee Schraner who again won the R.V.B.A. State Singles Champion of Champions Title for the second year in a row. Then we had Joy Thomson winning the V.L.B.A. State Over 60's Singles ChampionshipTitle. Lyle Taberner nearly gave us the double in the R.V.B.A. Over 60's, he finished Runner Up in the State. Well done to all.

Congratulations to all Event Winners and Runners Up.
